Saman dance is a tribal dance Gayo usually displayed to celebrate important events in custom. Poem in saman dance use Gayo language. In addition, this dance is usually also displayed to celebrate the birth of Prophet Muhammad. In some literature mentions Saman dance of Aceh was founded and developed by Saman Sheikh, a scholar from the Gayo in Aceh Tenggara. Tari Saman established by UNESCO as a Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Man in the 6th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Intangible Protection of UNESCO in Bali, November 24, 2011.
Saman dance is a medium for the achievement of the message (propaganda). This dance reflects the educational, religious, manners, heroism, teamwork and togetherness.
Before saman started is as Preamble or opening, to appear an old intellectual or traditional leaders to represent the local community (keketar) or advice that useful to the players and spectators.
Saman dance is usually displayed without the accompaniment of musical instruments, but using the voice of the dancers and their applause is usually combined with hitting the chest and groin as synchronization and threw their bodies in different directions. This dance is guided by a leader who is called a sheikh. The uniformity of formation and punctuality is a must in this dance show, the dancers are required to have a high concentration and a serious exercise to perform perfectly. This dance is danced by men in particular.
Saman dance is unique, because they only show motion applause. It also has other movements, such as rocking motion, kirep, lingang, surang-saring (all motions are using Gayo language).
In general, saman dance was played by a dozens or scores of men, but the numbers must be odd. In others opinion said that this dance is danced by less than 10 people. It’s consist of 8 dancers and 2 as cue givers while singing. But, people of the modern era demands that a dance would be more lively when danced by dancers with higher numbers. In this dance show, sheik is regulating the movement of the dancers and singing the lyrics of saman song, namely ganit.
